Of all of the gay bars in San Diego, there's no other quite like the
Matador. It's only a block and a half from the Crystal Pier in Pacific
Beach, so when the door is open, patrons can hear the sound of waves crashing
on the nearby beach. And the "beach" attitude is everywhere inside.
"Gay-curious" young surfers frequently find their way to San Diego's only
beach-area gay bar. This is a relaxed, fun place, where the beer
busts on Sundays attract folks coming from Black's Beach to show off their
sunburns and drink beers that are intentionally kept much colder than usual
(referred to as the "Nectar of the Gods!") You can also wash down the sand
and sea-salt on your tonsils with any form of cocktails at the full-service
bar.
"Happy Hour" is actually eight hours long(!),
extending from noon to 8 p.m. every day. Monday night football specials
include free hot dogs (with all of the trimmings), chips and dips, with any
donations going directly to Special Delivery. The bartender keeps menus
from the many local fast-food places behind the bar, so you really don't
have much reason to leave the place once you get there.
