I'm planning to drive up to Palm Springs this weekend for this series
of events - There's an awesome team that has bought the Wolfs Den and
renamed it to the Barracks Bar. Dave Murdock, Daddy Nick and the others
from their team are extremely credible, and whatever they do tends to
make me sit up and take notice.
Leather bars are becoming our social center again - The Internet has
its value, but it's not very useful if you want to be surrounded by
hot, sexy, sweaty men sharing a common experience.  San Diego is going
through a renaissance, and so is Palm Springs!

RHSD FistFest 2002 is coming up June 14-15 2002. Hotel rooms at CCBC are
sold out, but passes to FistFest are available.
If you have a room, and are willing to share with someone, please let me
know.  I currently have over 20 names on a waiting list for a room.  Some
are more than happy to share a room to be able to stay on the grounds at
CCBC.
Also, if you live in the Palm Springs area, and have a room that you may
want to rent or to house an out-of-town member during the FistFest weekend,
let me know that as well. RHSD
FistFest 2002 will be even bigger than ever....  well over 250 expected
this year. To get an early start,  many  arrive on Thursday to play, and
some stay through Monday to be true PIGS.  Don't  miss the countries
largest FF party.
CCBC is full, but nearby hotels like the Villas is only 3/4 of a mile awa
y. Also, the Holiday Inn Express and a Travelodge are nearby as well if
you need to economize and be close.
Passes for RHSD FistFest 2002 will get you on the grounds for the weekend.
Check our website or contact me directly for more info about this
wonderful weekend. You can print the registration form from the RHSD
website and send it in early.  Cost is $30 in advance for both nights play
parties, or $40 at the door. Sign up early!
If you have a room there at CCBC, it does not get you into the private
FistFest party area. You still need to pay for the party itself, so
register for FistFest in advance and save some money as well.
Hot Hands, Hot Holes, Hot Men, and me... all await you. Fist under the
stars on a hot desert night... what more could you want?

OCLA SM SAMPLER IN PALM SPRINGS (October 20-22, 2000) - Orange Coast
Leather Assembly invites you to our annual SM Sampler. This year's
Sampler will run for 3 days, with presenters offering sessions
starting on Friday, October 20, and closing ceremonies in the
afternoon on Sunday, October 22.
---
Purpose: Sampler is a weekend event for OCLA participants and their
guests. It is a safe place to try things you've never tried before,
at your level of comfort and expertise. During your individual
sessions with a presenter, you have an unequaled opportunity to ask
questions, at any level from novice to expert, and to try new kinks
as a Top or bottom. By limiting the size of our event we can provide
a unique one-on-one learning experience with a presenter in an
intimate setting.
Registration: The cost for the event is $95. Email
<mailto:info@ocla.org> for the form.
The registration fee includes continental breakfast and lunch on
Saturday and Sunday, and dinner on Saturday evening. Lodging is not
included. A limited number of "scholarships" for registration are
available to active OCLA participants. If you are interested in
financial assistance, please contact Doug as soon as possible. All
inquiries are strictly confidential.
Please send a check payable to The Center - Orange County to the
address below. Do NOT make a check out to OCLA as we will not be able
to cash it and it will be returned to you. Refunds will be issued on
a case-by-case basis. A penalty charge may apply.
After October 1, 2000 registration will be on availability basis
only. Please check with Doug prior to sending late registration. We
have limited space for 130 participants and we sell out the Sampler
early every year, so send in your registration form immediately. If
you have sent in your registration and have not received your
confirmation by October 7, please call the number below. You will not
be allowed into the event without a confirmed registration and a
signed release form (included in confirmation packet.) All
participants must be 21 years of age or older.
Location: The presenters and the play area will be at the Cathedral
City Boys Club, Cathedral City, CA. There are about a dozen rooms
available onsite for participants. These rooms will cost $300 for the
weekend (check-in Friday, check-out Monday). To make things fair,
there will be a random drawing at the OCLA meeting on August 15 to
determine who is offered these rooms. Please mark on your
registration form if you would like to be entered into the drawing.
There is not a designated overflow hotel, please make your own
arrangements for lodging nearby. There is a Travelodge, Days Inn and
the Villas in Cathedral City, a Motel 6 in Rancho Mirage and (for the
gay crowd) the Desert Palms Inn, all within a mile or two of CCBC.
Committees: Sampler is a volunteer eventSąto make everything work, all
participants must help out by covering a two-hour shift in the
various volunteer duties. If any scheduling conflicts arise with your
sessions, YOU are responsible to find a replacement for your shift.
If you can help with hauling and setup please indicate so on the
registration form. For all other volunteer duties (security, food
service, etc.) you will sign up for your shifts when you register at
the Sampler.
Questions: Doug is available to answer questions you may have. He can
be reached on the OCLA voice-mail at The Center (714) 534-0862 (ext.
356) or email address <mailto:sampler@ocla.org.>
Hope to see you all there, Douglas Ward, OCLA Sampler Coordinator

SAN DIEGO LEATHERFEST XI IN PALM SPRINGS

From: Papa Tony
I just got back from San Diego LeatherFest in Palm Springs (held over
Labor Day Weekend). I'm extremely pleased and proud of our wonderful
community, which came together spectacularly. I first entered the
leather scene in 1977, and I have never, ever seen such an outpouring
of support, energy, good-will and wisdom to make an event successful.
This is not hyperbole - I truly mean that.
The last time that LeatherFest was held a few years ago, it was in a
four-story parking-garage. This time around, it was held at the
nicest, largest resort I have ever visited. The staff there was
uniformly friendly, supportive and non-wierded-out, and the
facilities were first-class all the way. It was a hell of a treat
for me personally.
From a gay-male standpoint: The last few LeatherFests didn't have
many gay guys amidst the pansexual (bi, straight, transsexual and
lesbian) crowd, and I sure missed 'em. This time around, there were
scads of gay leathermen attending, and I think maybe about ten
percent of 'em didn't feel comfortable around folks who weren't like
them, due to their own preconceptions and shyness. The rest of them
were utterly stoked at how nice everybody was - this is probably the
first time many gay men have been in an environment where their
faggotude doesn't matter at all with anybody whatsoever. They were
just normal, natural and welcomed members of the Tribe. I got a lot
of feedback about this, and it was all exciting and mind-blowing for
the guys. I had my own, similar breakthrough a few LeatherFests ago,
and it's a great reason to go if you've never been.
The entire weekend ran like a well-oiled machine, and I completely
lay this at Jake and Michelle's feet - they staffed the event with
hard-core, dependable, experienced, impeccable and powerful folks who
got the job done right. Best of all, they have kept a paper-trail of
notes, so that next year's LeatherFest will be even better.
The single worst problem I saw all weekend was with the volunteers -
They just wouldn't go away! I have never, ever seen such a problem
before, and it speaks really well for our San Diego team. Here's
what I mean - There were what seemed like hundreds of support-team
staff and volunteers, and the volunteers would arrive early, stay
late, and take on more shifts than they had originally signed-up for.
They were getting underfoot, and nobody predicted this behavior.
There were time-sheets for the volunteers, and you would have thought
they were state Lotto tickets - Volunteers were competing to get more
and more and more hours signed off. They were staggering around at
all hours with bags under their eyes! Once folks figured out what
the problem was, it got handled.
The end result of this behavior was that the attendees felt utterly
pampered, welcome and included. It was sheer luxury for them to
relax and let everything be handled. The thousands of man-hours
spent preparing for the weekend paid off big - the attendees for this
year are going to report back to their communities, and the tradition
will build more and more.
The San Diego Gay Rodeo is the biggest, best-run gay rodeo on the
worldwide circuit, and it's run the same way - Have a solid system of
leadership and planning, build upon the system every year with
improvements, and let the public word-of-mouth build the reputation.
Here's my prediction, after watching the Rodeo's progress, and now
LeatherFest's progress:
In a few years, LeatherFest will take over the entire, huge honking
resort, plus four or five other hotels, just like the Rodeo does.
Their system is that similar, and their satisfaction-levels are that
high.
Congratulations to the entire team.

Like all communities, we fall apart periodically when High Drama
erupts. However, when a common, unifying dream unites us, we have
enormous power and majesty, and our individual talents merge into
something greater than the sum of its parts. LeatherFest XI shows
what we are capable of, and it speaks well for us all.
GREAT job!

Subject: [PT-List] San Diego to Palm Springs Bus Trip Nov. 18th
Date: November 5, 2001
---
(Note from Tony: Mr. San Diego Eagle 1998 Randy Vidal is a bartender
at ZONE, and he has organized these bus-tours to LA and Palm Springs
before with great success. The bus-tours are meant to be a party-trip
for gay men to drink and carouse on the way, have fun in Palm Springs
once you arrive, and then head on back. It's a great
bonding-experience for the guys, and Randy has planned it for the
weekend after this one...)
